Enterprises Showcase Solvent-Free Polyurethane Laminating Adhesives at Industry Expo, Empowering Green Packaging Upgrade

Against the backdrop of global dual-carbon goals and increasingly stringent environmental regulations across the packaging industry, green, low-carbon and recyclable packaging solutions have become the core development focus of the sector. At the recently concluded National Flexible Packaging Industry Exhibition, a number of leading domestic adhesive manufacturing enterprises focused on sustainable packaging development, officially launching high-performance solvent-free polyurethane (PU) laminating adhesives. The new products aim to solve the environmental pain points of traditional packaging lamination processes, accelerating the comprehensive transformation of the packaging printing industry toward pollution-free and energy-saving production.
For a long time, solvent-based polyurethane laminating adhesives have dominated the flexible packaging lamination market. However, such traditional adhesives contain a large amount of organic solvents, which will release massive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during production and lamination processes. These emissions not only pollute the atmospheric environment, but also threaten the occupational health of front-line production workers. In addition, solvent-based processes require supporting drying and waste gas treatment equipment, which pushes up enterprises’ production energy consumption and operating costs, and also leaves residual solvent odor on packaging materials, failing to meet the high food safety standards of food, pharmaceutical and daily chemical packaging.
Targeting these industry bottlenecks, the newly exhibited solvent-free PU laminating adhesives adopt 100% solid content formula with zero solvent addition throughout production and application. Compared with traditional products, the core advantage of this new adhesive lies in thorough VOC emission elimination, realizing truly green and pollution-free lamination production. According to on-site technical data released by exhibitors, the new adhesive cuts production energy consumption by nearly 30% by removing the high-temperature drying procedure required for solvent volatilization, while simplifying production processes and reducing manufacturers’ equipment investment and daily operation costs.
In terms of application performance, the upgraded solvent-free PU adhesive maintains excellent bonding strength and composite stability. It is compatible with various common packaging materials including PET, PE, aluminum foil and biodegradable plastic films, and is suitable for high-speed automatic lamination production lines to meet the efficient production demands of large-scale packaging factories. Besides, the product features low odor and excellent high-temperature retort resistance, which perfectly fits the strict safety requirements of heat-resistant food packaging, snack packaging and sterile medical packaging, filling the performance gap of many early low-end solvent-free adhesive products on the market.
During the exhibition, the new green adhesive products attracted wide attention from packaging manufacturers, raw material suppliers and industry experts. Many visiting enterprises reached preliminary cooperation intentions on site. Industry insiders pointed out that global packaging regulatory standards are constantly being upgraded, and recyclable and low-carbon packaging materials are being comprehensively promoted. Solvent-free lamination technology will gradually replace traditional solvent-based processes and become the mainstream standard for flexible packaging composite processes in the next three to five years.
A senior R&D official from one exhibiting enterprise stated in an exclusive interview that green innovation is the inevitable way for the packaging adhesive industry to break through. The company will continue to invest in R&D of biodegradable adhesive formulas and recyclable packaging matching adhesive solutions in the future. By optimizing product formulas and upgrading application technologies, it will help the entire packaging industry build a closed-loop circular economy system.
As the whole industrial chain attaches greater importance to environmental protection and sustainable development, the debut of solvent-free polyurethane laminating adhesives marks a key technological upgrade in China’s packaging adhesive industry. Driven by market demand and policy guidance, eco-friendly adhesive materials will further accelerate the green transformation of the upstream and downstream packaging industrial chain, contributing more practical technological power to the global low-carbon packaging cause.
