Most acrylic emulsions used for relief coatings on the market have insufficient flexibility; after film formation, the texture layer is brittle and easy to crack when the wall substrate shrinks, and the adhesion with the top finishing coat is poor, leading to peeling and mottling of the decorative surface. 1. Performance Requirements of Napped Relief Middle Coatings

Relief middle coatings need to simultaneously meet four core performance indicators:

  2. High flexibility: The film does not crack with tiny wall substrate deformation, avoiding texture cracking and wall surface repair;

Ordinary hard acrylic emulsions have Tg above 5°C, the formed relief film is rigid, and micro-cracks will appear on the texture surface after seasonal temperature changes; high-flex polyurethane emulsions have high cost and poor compatibility with inorganic filler sand powder, which limits large-scale promotion. RF-8602 balances cost and flexibility, with Tg=-10°C, and the viscosity range of 100–5000 mPa.s can be adjusted according to the texture construction process, which is very suitable for relief middle coating production.

2. RF-8602 Relief Coating Formula Design & Viscosity Matching

The main raw materials of flexible napped relief middle coating include RF-8602 emulsion, inorganic matte filler, quartz sand of different mesh sizes, cellulose thickener, biocide, defoamer and water. RF-8602 acts as the film-forming flexible binder of the whole system, and the proportion of emulsion in the formula is controlled at 18–25 wt% according to the texture thickness requirement: thick napped relief with high concave-convex texture increases the emulsion proportion to improve film flexibility; thin matte texture can appropriately reduce the emulsion proportion to control production cost.

The blue light milky white appearance of RF-8602 represents uniform latex particle size distribution, and the mixed relief coating slurry has fine texture without coarse particles, and the formed napped surface is delicate and uniform.

3. Flexible Film-forming Mechanism to Avoid Relief Texture Cracking

After the relief coating mixed with RF-8602 is scraped on the wall, water evaporates and latex particles coalesce to form a continuous elastic polymer network, wrapping inorganic sand and filler particles inside the film. When the concrete wall shrinks or expands with temperature, the polymer network can stretch and deform synchronously, absorbing internal stress, so that the concave-convex relief texture will not produce obvious cracks. Compared with hard acrylic relief coatings, the crack resistance service life of RF-8602 modified middle coatings is increased by more than 3 times, greatly reducing the after-sales repair rate of decorative wall engineering.
In addition, the anionic molecular structure of RF-8602 improves the surface activity of the relief film, enhances the adhesion between the middle coating and the subsequent water-based finish coat, and avoids the common problems of mottling, peeling and color difference of the top coat caused by poor interlayer bonding of traditional relief coatings.

4. Storage & Microbial Protection Scheme for Relief Coatings

RF-8602 original sealed packaging has built-in microbial inhibitors, and will not mildew or corrupt during transportation and 6-month sealed storage. After being prepared into finished relief coating, a small amount of compatible broad-spectrum biocide needs to be added to the formula, because the mixed coating contains a large amount of inorganic filler and free water, which is easy to breed bacteria and mold after long-term opening and use. The TDS specially reminds that hygiene management should be strengthened during processing and after opening packaging to prevent microbial attack; regular addition of biocide is the standard process for relief coating manufacturers to extend the shelf life of finished products.
