RF-9065: Improving Flexible Waterproofing Coatings with High-Performance Polymer Technology

The performance of a waterproofing coating depends on much more than its ability to repel or block water. In practical construction applications, the coating may face moisture, temperature fluctuations, substrate movement, and long-term environmental exposure. At the same time, manufacturers need a polymer that can work effectively with fillers and other additives during formulation.

This makes polymer selection one of the most important decisions in the development of water-based flexible waterproofing coatings.

RF-9065 is a high-performance styrene/acrylate copolymer emulsion developed for one-component flexible waterproofing applications. It combines good elasticity durability, substrate adhesion, water resistance, excellent powder encapsulation, high thickening response, and anti-swelling performance under water immersion.

A Polymer Designed for Formulation Flexibility

RF-9065 is supplied as a milky white liquid with a solid content of approximately 48 ± 1%. It has a pH value of 8 ± 1 at 25°C, a specified particle diameter of 0.10–0.30 μm, and an anionic ionic type. Its minimum film-forming temperature is below 0°C.

For waterproofing formulators, these characteristics provide a useful polymer base for developing flexible coating systems.

The polymer is particularly interesting for formulations where film flexibility and filler compatibility need to be considered together. RF-9065 provides both good elasticity durability and excellent powder encapsulation, allowing formulators to work with filler-containing waterproofing systems while maintaining the desired polymer contribution to the coating.

Flexibility Is Essential for Waterproofing

A waterproof coating forms a protective film over the substrate. During service, this film may be exposed to changes in temperature and other sources of movement. A flexible coating system can be advantageous when the waterproofing layer needs to accommodate deformation.

RF-9065 demonstrates high elongation performance. Under untreated conditions, the reported elongation at break reached 406%, exceeding the specified value of ≥300%.

Following treatment, the coating maintained high elongation values. Alkali treatment resulted in 520% elongation at break, while acid treatment and heat treatment resulted in 385% and 340%, respectively.

These results show that the coating system maintained substantial flexibility under the reported test conditions.

RF-9065 also passed the reported -15°C low-temperature bending test, providing an additional indication of low-temperature flexibility.

For manufacturers developing flexible waterproofing products, these properties can contribute to a coating system designed for both flexibility and durability.

Water Resistance with Anti-Swelling Performance

Water exposure is one of the biggest challenges faced by waterproofing materials. A coating must resist water penetration while maintaining the stability of the film itself.

RF-9065 provides excellent water resistance and excellent anti-swelling performance under water immersion. The product information states that its small molecule migration control technology contributes to excellent interlayer adhesion and water resistance, together with weather resistance and aging resistance.

The reported water impermeability test was conducted at 0.3 MPa for 2 hours, and the RF-9065-based coating passed the test as impermeable.

This provides useful evidence of the waterproofing performance of the tested coating system under the specified conditions.

More importantly, the product's anti-swelling property under water immersion provides an additional performance advantage for formulations where prolonged contact with water is a concern.

Adhesion to Construction Substrates

Waterproofing coatings need to remain firmly attached to the substrate. Even a coating with excellent water resistance may not provide reliable protection if adhesion is insufficient.

RF-9065 provides good adhesion to substrates. The reported adhesion strength reached 1.48 MPa under standard conditions and 1.50 MPa on damp substrates.

The results demonstrate good adhesion under both of the reported conditions.

For waterproofing formulators, adhesion to damp substrates is particularly relevant because moisture conditions may be encountered during construction and application.

Supporting High-Filler Waterproofing Formulations

A major consideration in commercial coating formulation is the ability of the polymer to work effectively with pigments, mineral fillers, and other additives.

RF-9065 provides excellent powder encapsulation and good pigment and filler loading capacity. It also offers a high thickening response.

The product's representative formulation contains 45% RF-9065 and 43.5% 800-mesh ground calcium carbonate. The formulation also includes dispersant, defoamers, ethylene glycol, thickener, water, and biocide.

The high proportion of ground calcium carbonate in this example demonstrates the relevance of RF-9065 for filler-containing waterproofing systems.

For manufacturers, the formulation can serve as a reference starting point for laboratory evaluation, followed by optimization according to specific raw materials, equipment, application requirements, and target coating properties.

Mechanical Strength for a Balanced Coating Film

Flexibility should be balanced with mechanical strength. A waterproofing film needs sufficient tensile strength to maintain its integrity while still being capable of elongation.

The reported tensile strength of the RF-9065-based coating was 2.45 MPa under untreated conditions. After alkali treatment, the tensile strength was 1.25 MPa, while acid treatment resulted in 1.36 MPa. After heat treatment, the tensile strength reached 2.97 MPa.

When evaluated together with the elongation data, these results demonstrate the combination of mechanical strength and flexibility achieved under the specified test conditions.

A Comprehensive Performance Profile

For waterproof coating manufacturers, RF-9065 offers several performance characteristics within one polymer system:

  • Styrene/acrylate copolymer technology

  • Approximately 48% solid content

  • Minimum film-forming temperature below 0°C

  • High elongation at break

  • Good elasticity durability

  • Good adhesion to substrates

  • Excellent water resistance

  • Excellent anti-swelling performance under water immersion

  • Excellent powder encapsulation

  • High thickening response

  • Good pigment and filler loading capacity

  • Good weather resistance

  • Good aging resistance

  • Good low-temperature flexibility

The product information provides a construction dosage reference of approximately 1.5 kg of liquid material per square meter.

From Polymer Selection to Finished Waterproofing Product

For construction chemical manufacturers, the goal is not simply to select a polymer with one outstanding specification. The more important challenge is to develop a finished coating in which multiple properties work together.

A successful flexible waterproofing formulation may need to balance:

Film formation for creating a continuous protective layer.

Flexibility for accommodating movement and deformation.

Adhesion for maintaining contact with the substrate.

Water resistance for preventing water penetration.

Anti-swelling performance for maintaining film stability during water immersion.

Filler compatibility for supporting practical formulation design.

RF-9065 provides characteristics relevant to each of these areas, making it a versatile polymer option for flexible waterproofing development.

Conclusion

The development of high-performance waterproofing coatings requires a careful combination of polymer technology and formulation design. Manufacturers need raw materials that can contribute to flexibility, adhesion, water resistance, mechanical performance, and formulation efficiency.

RF-9065 provides a strong foundation for this development. Its styrene/acrylate copolymer technology, high elongation, good substrate adhesion, excellent powder encapsulation, high thickening response, water resistance, and anti-swelling performance make it suitable for consideration in one-component flexible waterproofing systems.

With its balanced performance profile and representative high-filler formulation, RF-9065 offers waterproofing manufacturers a practical polymer solution for developing flexible, water-resistant coating systems for modern construction applications.
